Abstract

The crime of genocide occupies a unique place in the popular imagination, and its association with the horrors of the Holocaust remains primordial. This identification of the Jewish people as the historical victims of genocide may also be a reason why many in the West, as well as within Israel itself, have been so unwilling to label the killing of civilians by Israeli forces in Gaza a genocide.
