Abstract

Decolonisation was not a diplomatic achievement but the result of struggles by colonised peoples for freedom. Diplomacy had served colonial powers well, preserving the status quo and shielding them from accountability for their crimes. Western powers also sought through diplomacy to retain newly independent countries in their grip, but failed ultimately to stop them bursting on to the world stage with their aspirations to dignity and freedom from domination.
