The global trading system is confronted with various challenges. The optimism about the merits of globalisation and the welfare-boosting effects of free trade have faded in the light of geo-strategic competition anti-globalisation backlash, and environmental catastrophes. In this context, economic rationales in trade policy making lose importance and non-economic considerations gain prominence. In my PhD, I seek to understand how countries moderate the tensions between economic on the one hand.,
