Only a few years after the first national park was established in the United States, colonial governments had already begun designating large areas of Africa as protected areas. Today, government-mandated protected areas remain the dominant vehicle for protecting wildlife in Africa, but they are now accompanied by a range of local conservation measures – from public-private partnerships to community-based conservation programmes.
