International trade and regional economics 000302733 520__ $$aDo trade-induced labor market opportunities affect women's marriage and fertility decisions? Exploiting regional variation in the exposure to the U.S. granting of Permanent Normal Trade Relations (PNTR), we find that more exposed Chinese prefectures experience a relative increase in the fraction of unmarried young women. This relative increase is due to young women delaying their first marriage and more married women choosing to divorce. The share of young women with children, as a result of changed marriage decisions, also experiences a relative decline in more exposed areas. We show that these shifts in family decisions coincide with a trade-induced increase in female workforce participation and reallocation of women relative to men to the service sector, where wages are higher. 000302733 6531_ $$aGender, Class, Race and Intersectionality 000302733 6531_ $$aTrade and Work 000302733 700__ $$aOuyang, Difei 000302733 700__ $$aYuan, Weidi 000302733 700__ $$aZi, Yuan 000302733 8564_ $$9fd3952d8-5f97-42f9-ad63-bd8b0d70744b$$s3044568$$uhttps://repository.graduateinstitute.ch/record/302733/files/DP17607.pdf 000302733 901__ $$uInternational Economics Department 000302733 901__ $$uCentre for Trade and Economic Integration 000302733 909CO $$ooai:repository.graduateinstitute.ch:302733$$pGLOBAL_SET$$pIHEID:Explore 000302733 981__ $$aoverwrite
