Abstract

The interpretation process and the way treaties operate have a very concrete impact on how governments assume treaty obligations. One of the most flexible notions to reach an interpretation is the object and purpose (O&P). Apart from interpretation itself, the O&P also serves as a benchmark in the 1969 VCLT, the 1978VC and in the 1986VC to assess the validity of certain legal acts such as reservations or whether there will be ipso jure continuity to a treaty after a succession of state.
