Abstract

This preliminary thesis dissertation mobilizes the histories of economic planning and policymaking in independent India in such a way that this historiographical survey supplies the rationale for examining the role of India's regional states in the policymaking exercise. It makes the case for Madras state as a suitable candidate for illuminating how individual states negotiated their economic interests within an asymmetric federal framework. Finally, it outlines the methodology and sources.
