However, the Appellate Body finds itself currently embroiled in a crisis that has crippled it. This article delves into the reasons that may account for this state of affairs. We examine a sample of Appellate Body decisions, that, on the one hand, had significant policy and systemic implications for WTO dispute settlement, but on the other hand, are beset with notable flaws. While it is human to err, and there is no reason why this old adage should not be applicable to international tribunals, by developing an overly dogmatic jurisprudential tradition that has the potential to perpetuate even the most deficient rationale, the Appellate Body invited at least some of the criticism that escalated into political maneuvering that rendered it inoperative. Our aspiration is that this crisis can serve as a source of valuable lessons regarding how to mitigate the risks that international adjudicators must inevitably bear when interpreting international treaties. In an effort to trigger a scholarly discussion on how to make the work of the Appellate Body more sustainable, we outline a possible blueprint to resolve the current deadlock. 000301594 542__ $$fOpen access article, Creative Commons Attribution-NoDerivative (CC BY-ND) licence$$uhttps://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nd/3.0/ 000301594 580__ $$aIn: Journal of International Economic Law. - Volume 26(2023), no 3, pages 435-461 000301594 6531_ $$aGlobal Governance$$0319128 000301594 6531_ $$aTrade and Work 000301594 700__ $$aSanchez Miranda, Jorge 000301594 700__ $$aSanchez Miranda, Manuel 000301594 8564_ $$9ee6c6001-bf5a-46b9-b73d-9e0ddc5da7ac$$s611422$$uhttps://repository.graduateinstitute.ch/record/301594/files/jgad023.pdf 000301594 901__ $$uCentre for Trade and Economic Integration$$0319292 000301594 909CO $$ooai:repository.graduateinstitute.ch:301594$$pGLOBAL_SET$$pIHEID:Explore 000301594 981__ $$aoverwrite
