Abstract

"Automated weapons (AWS) create an accountability gap in International Law, scholars in the field have argued. Yet, there is no academic consensus on what prosecuting future crimes involving Autonomous Weapon Systems might entail. My thesis clarifies this by questioning the accountability gap theory with an interdisciplinary synthesis of law and technology scholarship. In fact, existing International Criminal Law, International Humanitarian Law and International Human Rights Law can address AWS-related crimes; an insistence with important ramifications for the responsible future use of AWSs."
