Abstract

This dissertation seeks to establish (or dismiss) the historical lineage of mainstream Islamism through tracing and comparing the evolution of the Muslim Brotherhood and Ennahda movement in Tunisia, since their inception, against the backdrop of historical processes and structures that unfolded in Egypt and Tunisia since the 18th century. In doing so, this dissertation aims to present one of many histories of Islamism.
