Worldwide, women are disproportionately engaged in informal employment, or work occurring outside the legal and regulatory framework. Within the informal economy, women are concentrated in jobs that are traditionally feminized. Although this work can provide a chance for women to earn income where job opportunities are scarce and while fulfilling their domestic obligations, such jobs tend to be precarious and poorly paid, and reflect the barriers women face to entering the formal labor market.
