Abstract

During the Cold War the USSR promoted its version of modernity in the Global South to counter American influence. Since mid-1950s India stood out as one of the most important target countries for the Soviets. My research will focus on Soviet Public diplomacy agencies that had been active in India in the 1960s. The study will try to explain why it was important for Moscow to engage in Indian development and what motivated Indians to participate in Soviet programs.
