Shining Light on Growth Statistics: For What is Nighttime Light Really a Proxy?

"The use of satellite imagery to track changes in nighttime lights is increasing in recent years and new images with a resolution are now available. Authors using the original DMSP data have noted the correlation with national accounts from many different countries. This paper tests the strength of those findings in countries for whom agriculture contributes significantly to GDP. Applying an instrumental variables technique, I confirm the finding of a relationship between light and output which is robust to panel data techniques.
