This research investigates the emergence of the global international society of today. It does so by considering the perspectives, intentionality and agency of a variety of actors worldwide in the establishment of, between the mid-nineteenth century and the post second world war, three fundamental norms of international conduct of international society: the rule of non-intervention, the right to self-determination and the regulation of the use of military force.
