Abstract

The question my thesis ultimately seeks to answer is this: 'is the EU legally obligated to protect the socio-economic rights of distant strangers?' The EU is unique in enshrining in its constitutional documents a 'missionary principle' ostensibly requiring it to promote human rights, democracy, and the rule of law in all its relations with the wider world. In this thesis examine critically its implications upon the protection of socio-economic rights extraterritorially.
