Abstract

How do armed groups evolve? Existing accounts lack consensus on the conceptualization of armed groups and their transformation. This thesis suggests that armed groups are not unitary actors. It critiques current knowledge, maps the ontological lens through which such groups are studied, and theorizes group transformation by examining empirics from two cases. It shows how three processes "the nature of a group, in-group dynamics and the external context of war" play a role in group evolution.
