English Language Education and the (Re)Construction of Caste Identifications in Uttar Pradesh, India

I examine the use of English language education among dalit communities in urban north India. I study how dalits in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh position themselves with regards to the linguistic schooling marketplace and if they view English as a language of liberation within a Hindiphone environment. I identify the role caste associations play in increasing access to alternative linguistic educational opportunities for marginalized people and the value systems embedded in language and school choice.
