Nineteenth-century humanitarian intervention: a short overview

The purpose ofthis article is to show that a number of humanitarian interventions took place from 1815 to 1914. Nineteenth-century interventions and more recent ones, including the one in Libya, are not identical phenomena. The historian's perspective emphasizes that the amount of intervention that occurs in the present-day international system, or the seemingly original network of contemporary transnational relations, is anything but original.
