Abstract

In the past two decades online platforms have accumulated vast amounts of personal data, attaching little importance to the protection of privacy and the prevention of disinformation and fake news. Governments, on their part, use platforms to pursue economic or “security” goals. This article highlights how the relationship between states and online platforms presents a major risk for the populations and the legitimacy of national and international public institutions.
