Abstract
In a world in which rents from commodity exports have become a key source of income for authoritarian regimes, such regimes are increasingly testing the willingness of liberal democracies to ignore the infringement of international norms for short-term economic advantage. Recent geopolitical developments, however, have begun to shift this equation in favour of diversification and security of supply.
