Labor Contract Law and China's Turning Point

Zhou, Xiaojing

Martina Viarengo

Abstract: "This paper examine the relationship of China's Labor Contract Law and the expanding labor deficit, i.e. the "turning point" of running out of rural surplus labor. My model and data from sample cities both suggest that Labor Contract Law lead to a increase of social security coverage; and with institutional friction, there is a lost of value of the social security payment, which reduce the labor supply from agriculture sector and exacerbate the labor deficit.
