"Unravelling External Actor Involvement in African Regionalism: Co-optation, Competition and Co-operation

Staeger, Ueli

Stephanie Hofmann

Abstract: "Why and with what consequences are external actors involved in African regionalism? This thesis theorizes how resources and practices explain the involvement of the USA, the EU and China at the African Union. It charts three social mechanisms of external actor involvement: 1) the proliferation of political principals, 2) extraversion through side-payments, 3) competition of donors with functional and normative differentiation. The thesis combines quantitative data and anthropological fieldwork.
