Economics of Conflict

"This Preliminary Thesis Dissertation presents two draft articles and an idea for further research under the title « Economics of Conflict ». Focusing on intimate partner violence, in my first paper entitled "For Better or Worse: Domestic Violence and the Gender Wage Gap", I analyze empirically whether the gender wage gap causes household to be more prone to domestic violence, taking advantage of a detailed and exhaustive dataset on recorded criminal offenses in Switzerland from 2009 to 2015. The second article entitled « Does the end justify the means? Evidence on how Firms are affected by Conflict" is co-authored with Prof. Arcand. Using a novel identification strategy, we contribute to the recent studies on the economic costs and consequences of war and conflict by studying the impact of conflict on the manufacturing sector in a cross-section of countries which endured at least one conflict between 1989 and 2010. In the third and final chapter of the present document, I motivate the study of the Naxal movement as an idea for further research.
